Scott Pruett Blog: Post Porsche 250As far as the race itself, we had a really good car today, but a problem with our air jack really hurt us and may have eventually cost us a chance at winning. We probably lost 15 to 20 seconds on each of our two stops and on a tight track like Barber where passing can be difficult, losing that type of track position is awfully hard to overcome.
In the end, it turned out to be a three-car shoot-out between our #01 TELMEX Lexus, the #99 and the #6 over the final 20 minutes. All three cars were virtually identical performance-wise and while I was trying everything I could to get past the #99, Michael Valiante in the #6 was doing the same thing to me. You really have to give the guys at Michael Shank Racing some credit. They did a great job today. It really was some great racing today and it’s what Grand-Am racing is all about.
While we obviously would have liked to win today, we’re still tied for the lead in the points race and a second-place here is something we’re actually pretty happy with. Barber has never really been a track that we’ve been strong at year-in and year-out and it’s probably the most difficult track for us when you look at the season’s final five races. We’ll take the second and get ready for Watkins Glen.
Speaking of the championship, I have to believe that this one is going down to the last lap in the last race at Homestead. Right now, we’re tied with the Gainsco team and we’ve opened up a little bit of gap over the #10 Sun Trust team, but they’ll be right back in it at the end. I guess it should be no surprise that the #01, #10 and #99 cars are all in the middle of the fight. It seems like it’s that way every year. It really creates some great rivalries, but it also tells you a lot about the caliber and consistency of these teams. At the end of the day, if you win this championship, you know you’ve beaten some great race teams.
Hopefully, you’re looking forward to Watkins Glen as much as I am. We had a great car there in the spring and I can’t wait to get back on the track up there. It should be a lot of fun.
