Blackberry co-founder Douglas Fregin will attempt to translate his technical genius into driver seat smarts in this year’s Toyota Pro/Celebrity Race.

Fregin is the co-founder (along with friend Mike Lazaridis) of engineering company Research In Motion Limited (RIM), the creators of the Blackberry. Fregin also shares a Technical Emmy Award (1994) for Development of a Keycode Reader with Kodak and the National Film Board of Canada. He has worked primarily in product engineering on many projects, including the launch of the wireless Blackberry devices.

Fregin retired from RIM in 2007 and now works with the Salama Shield Foundation, an African AIDS relief agency in Uganda, and is a significant sponsor for the Center for International Governance Innovation (CIGI) African Initiative. He also is a sponsor of NanoTechnology Engineering programs at the University of Waterloo, Canada, the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics, the Waterloo Children’s Museum, and others.

Highlights:

• Member of BMW Trillium and Upper Canada Porsche Clubs.

• Has some experience driving on six tracks in Canada, including Mont Tremblant and Mosport.

• Grew up in Windsor, Ontario, Canada, and now lives in Waterloo, Ontario.
