CAMRY DRIVERS CLINCH CHASE CHAMPIONSHIP SPOTS IN ATLANTA - Todd Tallies Tundra’s Fifth Straight Triumph

HAMPTON, Ga. (Sept. 5, 2010) -- At Atlanta Motor Speedway, Kyle Busch was the top Toyota to the finish line in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series (NSCS) race and he also recorded a runner-up result in the NASCAR Nationwide Series race at the Georgia track. In the ‘Bluegrass State,’ Todd Bodine captured the checkered flag in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) event Friday evening at Kentucky Speedway.

NASCAR Sprint Cup Series (NSCS)
Busch came back from almost two laps down early in the 325-lap race at the 1.5-mile Atlanta Motor Speedway to cross the finish line fifth behind race-winner Tony Stewart, Carl Edwards (second), Jimmie Johnson (third) and Jeff Burton (fourth). His top-five finish enabled Busch to clinch his spot in the 12-driver, 10-race Chase for the Sprint Cup championship playoff that will begin following next weekend’s race at Richmond International Raceway.

Busch, who started third in the Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR) No. 18 Pedigree Toyota Camry, battled back from a speeding penalty on pit road and eventually fell more than a lap behind the race leaders. However, his team made adjustments throughout the race and late in the event he was challenging the leaders.

“We fought through an awful lot,” said Busch, after the race.  “It’s good to come home with a run like that for the whole Pedigree team.  They did a good job.  We just could never get the car exactly the way I wanted it.  We battled hard and made some good adjustments.  We came from almost two laps down and got back on the lead lap.  Have to thank Dave (Rogers, crew chief) and the guys on pit road for good pit stops.  What more could you ask for, I guess.”

“It was a hard fought battle and that’s what it’s going to take the next 10 races (in the Chase) -- to come back like this,” added Busch.  “We have good cars and we had a great race car.  It was really fast in the early portion of the race and some guys made some adjustments and got a little bit better than we did.  We never really picked up any time -- we just kind of bounced back and forth with the balance of the car.  I can’t thank everyone that’s helped us get to where we are and clinch a spot in the Chase.  Hopefully, we can go out and carry this momentum into next week at Richmond and have a strong run, and then go after these final 10 races.”

Busch’s teammate, Denny Hamlin, started on the pole in the JGR No. 11 Sport Clips Toyota Camry and led the field seven times for a total of 74 laps before retiring from the race with mechanical issues. Although Hamlin would complete 143 laps and finish 43rd, he would also clinch a spot in the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship playoff.

Along with Busch, Marcos Ambrose also recorded a top-10 Toyota finish in Atlanta.

Other Camry drivers in the field were Martin Truex Jr. (12th), Reed Sorenson (14th), David Reutimann (16th), Casey Mears (26th) Joey Logano (27th), Scott Speed (34th), Kevin Conway (37th), Joe Nemechek (38th) and Mike Bliss (42nd).

Busch remains third in the unofficial NSCS point standings following Atlanta. Hamlin (10th), Reutimann (16th) and Truex (20th) are also in the top-20 in points after 25 of 36 races.

The Sprint Cup Series returns to action at Virginia’s Richmond International Raceway, Sept. 11.

NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS)
In Saturday night’s NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS) race at Atlanta Motor Speedway, Camry driver Busch finished runner-up to race-winner Jamie McMurray. The Las Vegas-native crossed the finish line just .286 seconds behind McMurray.

Busch started on the outside of row one and led the field three times for a race-high 74 laps (of 195) in his JGR No. 18 NOS Energy Drink Camry.

“Unfortunately, the race didn’t quite unfold the way we wanted it to, but we had a fast NOS Energy Drink Camry,” said Busch, after the race. “I’m real proud of the guys. They gave me a car that could contend for the win. We just didn’t quite have enough there on the short run to keep up with Jamie (McMurray), once we got about 25 or 30 laps on the car.”

Busch was closing in on McMurray late in the race, but could never overtake him.

“I wasn’t able to catch him,” said Busch. “I think that was actually the 88 (Jamie McMurray) car going away. My car seemed to run the same pace most of the night. I really couldn’t do a whole lot to make it go any faster. I could slow it down a little bit, but I really couldn’t make it go any faster. So, if I hit my marks every single lap, which I might have missed two laps in the last 20 -- but that’s all I had. So, we came up short tonight.”

Along with Busch, Camry drivers Logano (sixth) and Jason Leffler (seventh) also posted top-10 finishes at the Georgia oval.

Other Toyota drivers in the field included Brendan Gaughan (16th), Kasey Kahne (19th), Michael Annett (21st), Trevor Bayne (24th), Brian Scott (28th), Sorenson (34th), and Steve Wallace (35th).

Kahne started on the pole in the Braun Racing No. 38 Great Clips Camry and was at the front of the field twice for 17 laps. The pole was the 13th for Camry drivers this year, and the 44th pole for Toyota in NNS competition.

Following the Atlanta race, nine Toyota drivers are in the top-15 in the unofficial NNS driver point standings -- Busch (third), Bayne (seventh), Wallace (eighth), Logano (ninth), Leffler (10th), Gaughan (11th), Annett (12th), Scott (13th) and Sorenson (15th).

The Nationwide Series returns to action at Richmond International Raceway, Sept. 10.

NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS)
Bodine won his fourth race of the 2010 season in Friday night’s NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) race at Kentucky Speedway.

Bodine started 14th in the No. 30 Germain Racing Toyota Tundra and quickly made his way to the front of the field, before a spin on lap 81 brought him to pit road. His pit crew repaired the damage without losing any laps, and ultimately set-up the race win utilizing fuel mileage strategy.

“That’s the way the trucks are during the race,” said Bodine, after the event.  “If somebody runs down tight on your quarter panel, you get loose.  We got a great run on Kyle (Busch) on the restart and he ran me tight through (turns) three and four, and I was just hanging on. Finally, it just came around on me.  That’s our misfortune, but it turned into our fortune because that’s what gave us the little extra fuel that we needed to get to the end.  I pedaled pretty hard about 20 laps to go and Mike (Hillman) Jr. (crew chief) kept reminding me to pedal, and about the last 10 laps I just rode around here half-throttle.  We had such a big lead and he was telling me how far we had.  I just kept pedaling and going, and we had enough fuel.”

Tundra drivers Aric Almirola (third), Timothy Peters (sixth) and Busch (seventh) also had top-10 finishes at the 1.5-mile oval located in Sparta, Kentucky.

The win marked the second time since joining the series in 2004 that Toyota drivers have won five straight races. In addition to Bodine’s victory at Kentucky, he also won at Nashville (Aug. 7) and Darlington (Aug. 14), and Busch was triumphant at Bristol (Aug. 18) and Chicagoland (Aug. 27). Tundra drivers also earned five consecutive wins in 2009 with victories at Bristol, Chicagoland, Iowa, St. Louis and Loudon, NH.

Earlier this year, Bodine also won at Texas to give him four NCWTS victories in 2010. It was also Bodine’s 21st NCWTS victory in a Toyota, and his first triumph at Kentucky in six series starts.

Toyota drivers have now won 11 of 18 NCWTS races in 2010, and 76 races since 2004.

Tundra drivers Justin Lofton (11th), Mike Skinner (13th), David Starr (14th), Donny Lia (18th), Miguel Paludo (20th) and Steve Park (25th) were also in the field.

With his victory, Bodine extends his lead in the unofficial NCWTS standings to 261 points over second-place Almirola following Kentucky. Peters (fourth), Skinner (eighth) and Lofton (10th) are also in the top-10 in points after 18 of 25 races.

The Camping World Truck Series returns to action at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, Sept. 18.
