Starting Position: 3rd
How was your car in practice and qualifying?
“Yeah. We struggled a lot in practice, too. Our race trim stuff was okay. I didn’t think we were really good, by no means. We switched to qualifying trim and I think we ended up 30th quick on the board by the end of practice. I just couldn’t get the same feel that I was looking for that I had the last time I was here. I was thinking, ‘It was a different tire, I just don’t have the grip, I don’t think I’m gonna find it.’ We were just trying to get something close at least. Apparently, Greg Zipadelli (crew chief) and the Home Depot team figured something out while we were in Nationwide qualifying over there. I went out there and dropped it off in (turns) one and two and picked up the gas and, ‘Oh, there it is. Where did that come from?’ It was pretty cool. When Carl (Edwards) ran his lap, he beat me by just a little bit and I was thinking, ‘Oh man, it would stink to get beat by that much.’ But Jimmie (Johnson) ran a really fast lap. I don’t think I had that much in me.”
Do you think tires will play a big part in Saturday’s race?
“We’re gonna find out a little bit tonight. Watching the truck race, it didn’t seem like tires did a lot. I think they only pitted once. I don’t think it’s gonna be huge. We bolted on tires in practice and didn’t really go much faster. I think there’s some ‘goody-goody’ for the first couple laps in them, but it seems like they balance out pretty quick to what the old tire was. It might just be a track position game. I’m not sure. We’ll see what the fall off is here in the Nationwide race is, but I think a lot of it is just gonna be moving around the race track trying to find speed. I think there’s gonna be a lot of guys up top. I think it’s gonna be really hard to pass.”
Were you trying to ‘flex your muscle’ with your incident with Ryan Newman at Michigan?
“I don’t feel like I was trying to flex my muscle, by no means. I’m not as pumped up as Carl (Edwards) is over there. I wanted to talk to him (Ryan Newman) about it last week and I did. I expressed how I felt about it and that’s that. I stick to my word. I stick to what I thought then and it’s still the same way I feel.”
Do you feel more confident in the Sprint Cup Series?
“I feel like we’ve been a lot better this year. We’ve run good but we’ve just got in a lot of junk. If we were more consistent we definitely would be up where we need to be. That confidence level comes up and you feel like you’re out there racing with these guys every week and sometimes you want some of the respect back that you give to some people and if not it gets frustrating.”

How was your qualifying lap?
“It was a good lap. The guys did a really, really good job all day having to work with two different drivers. (Aric) Almirola helped us out a lot today and I have to thank him. Rodney Childers (crew chief) and all my guys, they hustled. We weren’t that good in our mock qualifying runs, but the car was a lot better. I owe a lot to those guys. Those guys hustled and made all those changes to get two drivers in and out. I didn’t make it easy for them today, but I appreciate all they do.”

How was your qualifying lap?
“It was pretty good. Early draw was obviously not what we wanted, but I felt pretty good about the lap. It was a good pickup from practice. We had a really good practice with our NAPA Toyota. We weren’t really, really fast for the quick lap but our long runs were really good so that should be good for tomorrow night. I was pretty happy with the changes that we made there. One and two was really good then a little bit too loose in three and four with the sun on it so we’ll see what the draw will do. It was a good pickup for us and a good lap -- a good job by all of the guys.”

How was your qualifying lap?
“I mean, it was a good lap for us. We improved about three-tenths from what we did our mock run at so I think that’s going to be an improvement. I’m not sure if it will be top-15 material, but it will be somewhere hopefully mid-pack.”
How is your car handling?
“We tire tested here and the tire I believe is different from the one we tested in and we’ve struggled with it ever since we got here. It’s a task to try to keep this car under us and get the speed we need, but we’re slowly getting there. We’ve been fighting this car all day pretty much to try to get the speed and try to get enough handling and the feel that I want of it, but it’s an improvement for us -- that’s about three-tenths better. I’m sure it will be top-15.”
Was your car as loose as Jeff Gordon’s during your qualifying lap?
“My car was real close to doing that as well so I’ve got a little sympathy for him (Jeff Gordon). The track just seems a little bit freer right now than it was during practice. It’s tough to get a hold of, but obviously he did a great job of keeping it off the fence.”

How was your qualifying run?
“It was okay. We kind of have the same balance that we did in practice. I don’t know what we did to fix it. We’ve been trying to fix it all day and can’t really so that was the best that it’s been. We’re real loose into the corner and then we get tight in the middle so it’s really hard to fix that. Hopefully we’ll find something tomorrow that helps, but that’s the best we’ve been so that’s okay.”
