What happened on the first lap?
“I don’t know what happened there on the opening lap. I just lost it, I guess. It just went around. I had trouble every restart really trying to get going, especially through (turns) one and two. I had trouble getting going on restarts. All in all, we came back and bounced back solidly, so that was good. We needed a good run -- it’s been a while.”
Did the spin on the first lap damage to the car?
“The spin on the first lap, I don’t know what happened. I just lost it, I guess. It didn’t really have any impact on the car, I feel like. Minor (damage) maybe -- on straightaway speed. I felt like everything was fine. The car handled all right. We were a little bit tight all day. We kind of got it loose a couple times and were fast that way, but man it was so edgy to drive, I didn’t want to wreck the thing. We just needed a solid run today. We need to find speed somewhere else, not having to be so much on the edge.”
How would you describe today’s performance?
“I think it was fighting. We fought all day. We saved the day. It was just a mistake made early there that almost had us in big, big trouble. Fortunately, we came back.”
How did Eddie D’Hondt do as your spotter today?
“Things went well. Eddie was with me for all three races and he did a great job. We’re going to go have some lunch later this week and talk about a couple of things on how he did, how I liked it, and what maybe Dave (Rogers, crew chief) wants to hear different. But, so far, so good.”

How was your race today?
“We just didn’t take off as good as we needed to in the beginning of the race. That first wreck -- I didn’t get in it, but I ran over a brake rotor. It popped up over there and hit the front end. Had a bunch of scratches on the grill. Took two tires. Learned a lot about having to be on the bottom (of the race track). That will definitely help next time we come here, for sure. Finally got the car the best it was at the end. Maybe one more little adjustment might have helped. We about finished where we ran. That’s about as good as we where there at the end.”
How hot was it in the race car?
“It wasn’t that bad. It wasn’t as bad as practice. Practice was horrible. This wasn’t actually that bad at all.”

How was your race?
“Frustrating to run one lap down -- one position all day long. We had a good FedEx Camry, we could run with pretty much any car out there, but never had a chance really. Every time we were close to the ‘lucky dog’ we just missed it by a lap or two. It was a good call at the end and we made up a lot of spots to finish 15th.”

What problems did you face in today’s race?
“Wish we hadn’t been unlucky. Cut a left front (tire). Then, there at the end, ran into everyone checking up on pit road. We got caught in one of those slinky deals and tore the front up. Just a little bit unlucky. But, at least things are running better.”

How was your race today?
“Hot. It was tough. The first time out with the car, we didn’t have the cooling working, the helmet or back cooling. That didn’t work in the car. And, my drink bottle wasn’t working until the caution around lap 100 when we could replace it. That was rough. Then the engine overheated and that killed me. Then it was a question of staying out there. Halfway through the race, the car was really difficult to drive with a broken splitter. I hit the wall a couple of times, so I backed it down because there was no point in trashing it. Then we came in the pit and fixed it and the car was very strong. I could run two-wide even against the quick guys and hold my own. Too bad we lost too much time when the splitter came up. The car was loose after that, but it was fun. I could drive it hard.”
Did you have fun in today’s race?
“It was so much fun. It was very stressful because we came here without any practice and the team not knowing the car or the track, and me not being in the Cup car for over two years. It was a big question mark. But, that’s how I like it, when it’s tough. We managed to get going. After practice yesterday, I was worried for the race because we were very slow. But, we fixed it overnight and we kept fixing it during the race and by the end, the car was running really strong.”

What happened to your race car?
“We overheated like everybody else because we got covered up by that grass in turn two. And when I exited pit road, I ran something over. Maybe a piece of tubing that they missed. I’m sure they cleaned the race track but maybe they missed the apron. I felt it and was like, ‘Oh, man.’ And halfway down the back straightaway the front tire just exploded. A bummer day for us because our car was really good. We moved up to like 15th or 16th.”
