DIXON, BROWN RUN 1-2 IN SONOMA QUALIFYING - NINTH TOP FUEL POLE FOR TOYOTA DRIVERS IN ‘10

TORRANCE, Calif. (July 17, 2010) – Larry Dixon edged fellow Toyota driver Antron Brown to claim his fifth pole of the season in preparation for Sunday’s NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series’ Fram Autolite Nationals at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, Calif.

The one-two marks the fourth time this season that Dixon and Brown have qualified first and second at the same race, with Dixon capturing the pole on three of those occasions. The duo has combined to register nine number one qualifying positions in 15 races this season.

Things didn’t go as well for the Morgan Lucas Racing team, though, as the team has struggled in qualifying. Morgan Lucas will begin eliminations from the 10th spot, while teammate Shawn Langdon qualified 12th.

Cruz Pedregon continued his recent strong run in Funny Car qualifying with a fourth in his Toyota Camry Solara. It is the third time in the last four races that Pedregon has qualified fourth or better. Not far behind was Del Worsham, who had the fastest qualifying run in today’s final round to place sixth overall.

Sunday’s ESPN2 NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series coverage begins with NHRA RaceDay at 1:00 p.m. EDT, followed with coverage of eliminations live on ESPN2 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. EDT on ESPN2.

QUALIFYING NOTES:

  • Larry Dixon has now qualified in the top-three 14 times in 15 events this season. In this weekend’s three qualifying sessions, Dixon was never below third with a first, third and a second, earning six additional bonus points to extend his series points lead to 178 points over second-place.

  • Today’s number one qualifying position is the fifth of the season for Larry Dixon. He won each of the four previous events where he qualified first.

  • Antron Brown has qualified fifth or better in each of the last five threes with one pole, two seconds, a fourth and a fifth. He’s reached the final round of eliminations three times in the past four events.
