Toyota NHRA Sonoma PreviewANTRON ON THE RISE – With his third finals appearance in the last four races in Seattle, Antron Brown has not only climbed into fourth in Top Fuel points, but he’s now just 124 points out of second with three races remaining before the Countdown playoffs begin. Brown has reached the semi-finals or finals in each of the last four races and his six finals appearances ties him for second in the series – just one less than series leader Larry Dixon. He returns to Sonoma as the defending race-winner and will be looking for his first win of the 2010 campaign.
DIXON WATCH – Despite being beaten in the second round by fellow Toyota driver Shawn Langdon at Seattle, Larry Dixon can clinch the top spot for the Countdown to the Championship playoffs this weekend in Sonoma. He currently holds a 172-point advantage in the point race. Dixon leads the series in wins and finals appearances (seven each). He has won six of the last 10 Top Fuel events and has posted a 29-4 overall record in eliminations over the past 10 races. In addition, he’s qualified in the top-three in 13 of 14 races.
COUNTDOWN ROLL-CALL – With three races remaining in the “regular season,” two Toyota-sponsored drivers – Larry Dixon and Antron Brown - have already clinched their spots in the Countdown to the Championship playoffs. In addition, Shawn Langdon, who’s currently seventh in Top Fuel points, should wrap up a berth this weekend in Sonoma. His teammate, Morgan Lucas, also is in position to guarantee his spot in the Top Fuel title chase this weekend. In Funny Car, Toyota Camry Solara driver Del Worsham could secure a Countdown spot at Sonoma by advancing to the semi-finals or beyond. Cruz Pedregon faces an uphill battle as he heads into this weekend currently 146 points out of the 10th and final playoff berth.
LAST YEAR AT SONOMA – Last year in Sonoma, Antron Brown became the eighth driver to sweep all three races in the annual NHRA Western Swing after previously winning in Denver and Seattle. Larry Dixon, Morgan Lucas and Shawn Langdon all advanced to the second round before being eliminated. In Funny Car, both Del Worsham and Cruz Pedregon lost in the opening round.
