ANTRON BROWN WINS TF POLE; PEDREGON SECOND IN FUNNY CAR AT BRISTOL

BRISTOL, Tenn. (June 19, 2010) – Antron Brown won a series-high fourth pole position of the season on Saturday in preparation for Sunday’s Thunder Valley Nationals at the Bristol Dragway.

Brown registered the fastest overall time on Friday night with a 3.856-second pass. He backed up that time with the fastest time in Saturday’s second session and the second-quick time in the day’s first session. Overall, he earned a weekend-high eight bonus points in his qualifying.

Brown also won poles earlier this season in his Matco Tools/Toyota dragster at Gainesville, Las Vegas and Topeka. Combined with three poles from Larry Dixon, Toyota-sponsored Top Fuel drivers have been the fastest qualifier in seven of 12 races this season.

In Funny Car, Cruz Pedregon continued his recent surge with a season-best second in qualifying in his Snap-On Tools Toyota Camry Solara. He was edged for the pole by just .008 seconds by Ashley Force-Hood. Pedregon has turned in his three fastest runs of the season over each of the last three races. He also logged the second-quickest time of the day in Saturday’s two qualifying sessions.

“It’s been a methodical process and it’s taken a little longer than we would have liked,” said Pedregon. “But we’re starting to find out what the car likes and now it’s paying off for our whole team that’s hung in there, as well as our sponsors like Snap-On and Toyota. Friday night’s run put us in a great position on Sunday, but it’s today’s run that we’re really pleased with as we did it in the heat of the day in similar conditions that we will see tomorrow.”

In addition to Brown, Dixon also continued his strong run in Top Fuel with a third. It’s the 11th time in 12 races this season that Dixon has qualified in the top three in his Al-Anabi Racing Toyota dragster. Shawn Langdon, who led the first qualifying session on Friday, will start tomorrow’s eliminations from the number nine spot, while Morgan Lucas placed 14th.

Del Worsham built on his finals appearance from last weekend at Englishtown with another impressive performance in qualifying as he earned the fourth spot in his Toyota Camry Solara Funny Car.

Sunday’s ESPN2 NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series coverage begins with NHRA RaceDay at 3:30 p.m. EDT, followed with coverage of eliminations running from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. EDT.
