TWO IN TOP-TWO DURING WEEKEND IN DOVER - Scott wins in Tundra, Logano Second in CamryDOVER, Del. (May 31, 2009) -- One Toyota driver took home a first-place trophy and another Toyota racer recorded a runner-up result in this weekend's three NASCAR events at Delaware's Dover International Speedway.
Tundra driver Brian Scott picked up his first career victory in Saturday night's NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) race, while Joey Logano earned a second-place result in his Camry during Saturday afternoon's NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS) event.
In Sunday's NASCAR Sprint Cup Series (NSCS) race at the one-mile concrete oval, four Camry drivers registered top-25 finishes in the 400-lap event.
Joey Logano, driver of the Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR) No. 20 Home Depot Camry, was the first Toyota driver to the finish line with a 15th-place result. Following the rookie to the checkered flag were Camry drivers David Reutimann (18th), Marcos Ambrose (20th), Kyle Busch (23rd) and Brian Vickers (25th).
Reutimann started from the pole in his Michael Waltrip Racing No. 00 Aaron's Dream Machine Camry -- his second pole of the season -- and led the race twice for 25 laps.
"It started out really good and as we went on we were pretty decent," said Reutimann, the winner of last Monday's rain-shortened Coca-Cola 600. "We had to work on it a little bit and then we got caught a lap down when they had a debris caution, but we were still in pretty good shape. The car then started getting really, really loose on entry and we couldn't do anything to fix it. We battled hard and an 18th-place finish doesn't really even seem to be enough."
Other Camry drivers in the field included Robby Gordon (33rd), Michael Waltrip (35th), Denny Hamlin (36th), Scott Speed (37th), Joe Nemechek (38th), Dave Blaney (39th) and Mike Skinner (41st).
Busch (sixth) is the top Toyota driver in the unofficial NSCS point standings following Dover. Camry drivers trailing Busch in the standings include Hamlin (seventh), Reutimann (13th), Vickers (17th) and Ambrose (20th).
The next race on the NSCS schedule is at Pennsylvania's Pocono Raceway, June 7.
In Saturday afternoon's Nationwide Series race at Dover, Camry drivers led 195 of the 200 race laps before misfortune -- in the form of a flat right front tire -- denied Busch a chance at another trip to victory lane.
The 24-year-old driver was leading the race on a restart with two laps remaining following a late caution period. However, with a flat front tire Busch wasn't able to hold his position when racing action resumed. Second-place Joey Logano made contact with Busch, his JGR teammate, which allowed then third-place Brad Keselowski to pass both Busch and Logano and claim the checkered flag.
Until that point in the race, the JGR Camrys of Busch and Logano had dominated the race. Logano started from the pole and led the field three times for 87 laps, and Busch was in front of the field twice for a race-high 108 laps.
"Kyle said he could feel the right front tire go down as he was coming to the green for the restart," said Jason Ratcliff, Busch's crew chief. "He wasn't sure if it was down or not and then when he drove off he could feel it -- and it was too late by that time. If he had known it earlier we could have stopped and put right side tires on. But, it was at the point of no return where you're driving off into the corner and you don't have a right front tire."
In addition to Busch and Logano, other Camry drivers in the field included Brian Vickers (fourth), Scott Speed (seventh), Jason Leffler (eighth), Michael McDowell (11th), Michael Annett (19th), Scott Lagasse, Jr. (27th) and Marc Davis (34th).
Busch continues to lead the unofficial NNS point standings following Dover, and now sits 40 points ahead of second-place Carl Edwards. Toyota drivers Leffler (third), Logano (fourth), McDowell (11th), Lagasse, Jr. (13th), Annett (17th) and Vickers (18th) are among the top-20 in the point standings.
The Nationwide Series returns to action at Nashville Superspeedway, June 6.
Scott, driver of the Xpress Motorsports No. 16 Albertson's Tundra, recorded his first career NCWTS win in the 200-lap race. The 21-year-old driver registered his inaugural NASCAR triumph in his 39th career NCWTS start. He led the field once -- for the final 14 circuits -- on his way to victory lane.
The Boise, Idaho-native was running third late in the event when race-leader Kyle Busch and second-place Colin Braun both had tire problems which resulted in them making contact with the wall. Until that point in the race, Busch had led the field five times in his Tundra for a total of 133 laps. He would eventually finish ninth.
"It feels great," said Scott, after the race. "It's been a long time coming. I got to thank everybody back in Idaho. I got to thank my Dad, 'Thank you Dad. Thanks Mom.' This is awesome. I'm so happy to win with this team. These guys are like my brothers -- they've been so supportive. I wish my family could be here because this is just an awesome feeling."
Following Scott to the checkered flag were David Starr (third), Mike Skinner (eighth), Busch (ninth) and Terry Cook (10th). Other Tundra drivers in the field were Tayler Malsam (12th), Max Papis (16th), Timothy Peters (17th), Todd Bodine (18th), Johnny Benson (20th), T.J. Bell (23rd) and Brian Ickler (25th).
It was the fifth win this year for a Tundra driver in the first seven NCWTS races of the season. In addition, it marks the 56th win for a Tundra driver since Toyota joined the series in 2004.
In the unofficial NCWTS point standings following Dover, Skinner now trails first-place Ron Hornaday, Jr. by 27 points. Following Skinner in the standings are Busch (fourth), Scott (fifth), Bodine (sixth) Cook (seventh), Starr (eighth) and Benson (10th).
The Camping World Truck Series returns to action at Texas Motor Speedway, June 5.
