TOYOTA NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) - Post-Race Notes and Quotes - Lowe's Motor Speedway - May 15, 2009KYLE BUSCH, No. 51 Miccosukee Resort Toyota Tundra, Billy Ballew Motorsports
Finishing Position: 2nd
How frustrating was your race tonight?
"Frustrating night overall and that's how you can really put it. I don't know what that first pit stop was all about. I don't know why we had too many guys over (the wall) - just miscommunication or what. For some reason I rolled out of the gas down the backstretch to let those two decide who was going to get into turn three first and I veered to the left and got into the quarter panel and wrecked the 6 (Colin Braun) and 16 (Brian Scott). Can't keep up with the Chevrolets - that's downfall number one. Downfall number two is our stuff doesn't corner as good as theirs so we have a lot of work to do."
What happened in from your perspective in tonight's race?
"Enough went on that I don't even know where to start. Somehow we had problems on pit road - too many guys over the pit wall. I don't know whose miscue that was, but I guess we got it figured out there at the end because we only had four over the wall later in the day. We were just trying to be smart for NASCAR just having four over instead of the allowed five. I had to go to the back there and then got a penalty for rough driving which I was just rolling out of the throttle to allow those guys to race and I veered to the left a little bit and got into the quarter panel of the 6 (Colin Braun) and wrecked him and the 16 (Brian Scott) on accident and it was my fault so we will have to let that one roll off our shoulders and try to go on and move into the next one. I'm sure they're not happy about it, but I'm not very happy about the 33 (Ron Hornaday, Jr.) and the Chevrolets having the advantage that they do and it's just frustrating to race against that. A guy that just pulls down to the bottom of the race track like that and drives by you is just insane and it happens every week. It happens at Charlotte, Atlanta, Texas - every time we go to the race track. It's just very frustrating to have to race with those guys and I guess it's sort of how other people feel probably about us at JGR (Joe Gibbs Racing) in the Nationwide Series. I don't know - we'll have to just do our homework maybe."
Can you describe the restrictor plate on the trucks?
"We run restrictor plates in the Camping World Truck Series. It's a tapered spacer - that's what they call it and it's smaller than what the Chevrolets do so it restricts more horsepower from us than it does the Chevrolets. We're down probably about 12 to 15 horsepower. It's even more on torque."
Did you have any tires left to battle Ron Hornaday at the end of the race?
"It didn't matter. I was babying it a little bit because I knew he was kind of further back there and just trying to bide my time and not trying to wreck anybody else or myself. Unfortunately he just blew right up through there. I have to watch the tape to see how fast he came, but he came so fast that I didn't even know he was behind me. I wasted a little bit of time with (Matt) Crafton there, but not a whole lot that would have held up our performance any. (Ron) Hornaday just took it - he was gone."
TERRY COOK, No. 25 Cajun Industries Toyota Tundra, HT Motorsports
Finishing Position: 5th
How was your race tonight?
"The Cajun Industries Toyota Tundra was good all night long. We were real good at the beginning of the race. We made a couple of adjustments that we got off on and we were struggling getting into the corners - struggling getting through the corner and just struggling overall. The last pit stop of the night - Danny Rollins (crew chief) made some great adjustments and basically undid all those and then made a couple more small adjustments and got onto something there at the end of the race and race with Ryan Newman and these guys there at the end of the race. That was a lot of fun. I actually had to change my driving style with about 10 (laps) to go. What was working for me in the majority of the race wasn't working for me at the end and had to just search around and find some grip. Fortunately we found some and brought this Tundra home in fifth."
DAVID STARR, No. 24 Zachry Toyota Tundra, HT Motorsports
Finishing Position: 7th
Can you talk about your race?
"I'm just proud of everyone at HT Motorsports and Zachry. The guys worked so hard this week to get a good truck here at Charlotte, and we were pretty decent tonight. We had some good battles with our teammate, Terry Cook, so that was cool. It was so much fun to run up front again and mix it up with those guys. It was a solid top-10 finish for our team tonight, and we'll refocus and look to get better the next time out."
TAYLER MALSAM, No. 81 One Eighty Toyota Tundra, Randy Moss Motorsports
Finishing Position: 8th
How was your race tonight?
"This One-Eighty team did an amazing job getting me back out there after the spin when the 11 (T.J. Bell) got into us. I hate to see it for (Mike) Skinner - to go out like that - he had a fast truck too. It just shows that Randy Moss Motorsports is here and here to stay because we were both running up front all night."
What were you able to see of Mike Skinner's accident?
"I was spinning backwards so I don't know what happened to him. I heard he flipped, but I heard he was okay - a little sore, but glad to know he was okay."
STACY COMPTON, No. 60 Safe Auto Insurance Toyota Tundra, Wyler Racing
Finishing Position: 9th
Can you talk about your race?
"We weren't that good when we unloaded, but the guys kept working and working and got the truck a lot better. We had good calls all night. We had a pretty decent truck. We just kept getting tight. We ran about 10 laps but would just get too tight. It was a good points day. We just need to build on it. We just moved shops this week and it's been pretty busy. I'm awfully proud of the guys. Every week we get better and better. We will build on it."
BRIAN ICKLER, No. 15 Samsung Instinct Toyota Tundra, Billy Ballew Motorsports
Finishing Position: 16th
BRIAN SCOTT, No. 16 Albertsons Toyota Tundra, Xpress Motorsports
Finishing Position: 21st
JOHNNY BENSON, No. 1 Red Horse Racing Toyota Tundra, Red Horse Racing
Finishing Position: 23rd
TODD BODINE, No. 30 Copart Toyota Tundra, Germain Racing
Finishing Position: 25th
What happened that took you out of the race?
"We weren't the best truck here by any means, but we were going to finish fourth or fifth and get a decent points night. Matt (Crafton) was going three-wide so I went through the middle and I don't even know who is driving the 7 (David Gilliland), but whoever it was didn't give me any room and just got right on me and sucked me around. These trucks are so aero-dependent now. If somebody gets down tight on you like that it sucks you around and that was the second week in a row it's happened. We're going to have to look at our aero (aerodynamic) package and figure something different out. It's been this way for a long time. We have a great race team with Germain Racing - a great sponsor with Copart and this is just one race. We've got a lot of them to go and we'll be back. We'll get them at Dover."
MIKE SKINNER, No. 5 Rue & Ziffra Toyota Tundra, Randy Moss Motorsports
Finishing Position: 29th
What happened that took you out of the race?
"The replay that went on in my mind is that I went to pass a truck that was a lot slower than us and he run me down in the grass. We spun and ended up hitting pretty hard. That pretty much was it right there. That was pretty big. I just hate it for Rue Ziffra, Toyota - we had a good year going here and we didn't need this hiccup right here. It was just a really, really tough deal for us tonight. I blame myself - I knew who I was racing with right there and I probably should have let off the gas and waited another lap."
Have you ever had a hit as hard as that one?
"I'm sure I have. I guess they'll get the recorder out of there and that was that impact that a few years back would have sent you off here in a helicopter with your head taped to a board. The safety equipment did a wonderful job."
T.J. BELL, No. 11 Red Horse Racing Toyota Tundra, Red Horse Racing
Finishing Position: 30th
What happened in the accident with Mike Skinner?
"We were coming through the field and made a few adjustments there on that stop. I am just happy that everyone was okay and I'm so proud of NASCAR for everything they've done to make this sport so much safer. Mike (Skinner) being safe after that big of a hit - I'm just really excited about that."
Can you explain how it feels to be involved in an accident so severe?
"You don't know what to do. Honestly, I was more worried about Mike (Skinner) than anything. We were totaled and we knew we weren't going to get back out there. I was just hoping Mike (Skinner) was okay because of the hit he took."
