TOYOTA NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) - Post-Race Notes & Quotes Kansas Speedway - April 27, 2009MIKE SKINNER, No. 5 Bad Boy Mowers Toyota Tundra, Randy Moss Motorsports
Finishing Position: 1st
How special is this win for you?
"There are just so many people that contribute to this thing at Randy Moss Motorsports. We got us one. It's just really, really cool. We have a lot of effort going on here to build this whole program at Randy Moss Motorsports with Tayler (Malsam) and myself. We're just going to keep digging and hopefully we can get another one or two of these things before the year is out."
Are you surprised that this team won so early?
"Not really. If we would've been in front at Martinsville, they would've had to wreck us. We had a pretty good truck at Martinsville. Track position was so key. I said earlier that I think we finished a little better at Atlanta than we should have and worse at a few other places than we should have. Today, I thought we had about a fifth-place truck. The weather came into play. Whatever it did to the race track -- it freed our truck up a little bit and that Tundra was humming. Hat's off to Toyota and Tundra."
What has Eric Phillips (crew chief) meant to this team?
"Eric (Phillips, crew chief) has done a fantastic job with this thing. I have learned to shut my mouth a little bit as a driver, and he has learned how to deal with drivers like me, and it has been working well so far."
How is your 2009 season?
JOHNNY BENSON, No. 1 Red Horse Racing Toyota Tundra, Red Horse Racing
Finishing Position: 2nd
What has been the key to this team's recent success?
"Trip (Bruce, crew chief) has been doing a great job. Our truck wasn't very good when we unloaded. We just kept making changes, and the guys have been working real hard. Once we qualified, we thought we would be in good shape. The little bit we ran (Saturday), we were a little too tight. Today, we made a couple adjustments and had to start at the back one time. We weren't sure what the strategy was going to be. I think we were about as good as the 5 (Mike Skinner) and the 16 (Brian Scott)."
How much did strategy play into this race?
"I don't know if we're all used to the new pit road rules and I'm not sure if we all like them. It's hard to figure out what you're going to do or not do. We're on old tires, just like the 5 (Skinner). It just really throws the balance off if you just go with fuel like we did. It could've gone either way, but it was the best for us at the moment. It was a good call."
BRIAN SCOTT, No. 16 Albertsons Toyota Tundra, Xpress Motorsports
Finishing Position: 3rd
How impressed are you with your team's success?
"I'm really proud of everyone on the Albertsons Toyota Tundra. We have been running really good. Our results haven't shown just how good we've ran this year. Fortunately, we were sitting where we needed to be for this race. With how good we are, we should always be in the top five."
What is the key to these intermediate tracks for your team?
"I think our team is the best out there on the mile-and-a-half tracks. Jeff Hensley (crew chief) definitely knows the mile-and-a-half (tracks). We finished really strong at Homestead (2008), and that was a huge confidence booster for me. That was our Achilles heel up through the middle of the year. We just couldn't figure it out. We made a crew chief change and made the switch to Toyota, and everything started firing on all cylinders."
BRIAN ICKLER, No. 51 Miccosukee Resort Toyota Tundra, Billy Ballew Motorsports
Finishing Position: 5th
Are you happy with today's finish?
"Absolutely, after everything we have had to overcome. This Miccosukee team has done such a great job on pit road keeping me up front. Right there at the end, if free is fast, we just got dead-sideways. It was a good learning experience."
What is the next step in your learning process?
"These radial tires, these trucks and the plates you run on them -- there is so much learning. I have great mentors, though. Sometimes you know what you want, but sometimes you need to come up and say, 'I have got no idea.'"
TAYLER MALSAM, No. 81 One Eighty Toyota Tundra, Randy Moss Motorsports
Finishing Position: 11th
STACY COMPTON, No. 60 Safe Auto Insurance Toyota Tundra, Wyler Racing
Finishing Position: 13th
DAVID STARR, No. 24 AutismSpeaks.org/Zachry Toyota Tundra, HT Motorsports
Finishing Position: 17th
Can you talk about this weekend's race?
"We had a great truck with some bad luck. What a frustrating trip this whole race was. Our right rear quarter panel cut in two and cut our tire down. My Tundra was great, we just had no time to do anything. This weather did not cooperate at all."
GABI DICARLO, No. 90 Great Clips Toyota Tundra, Stringer Racing
Finishing Position: 18th
SHANE SIEG, No. 15 Samsung Instinct Toyota Tundra, Billy Ballew Motorsports
Finishing Position: 19th
TERRY COOK, No. 25 AutismSpeaks.org/Harris Trucking Toyota Tundra, HT Motorsports
Finishing Position: 20th
TODD BODINE, No. 30 Ventrilo Toyota Tundra, Germain Racing
Finishing Position: 21st
Was the wind a factor in your incident Saturday?
"I don't think the wind was a factor. The Ventrilo Tundra was really good at the start of the race. I know when you have trucks racing that close, you can't pinch off the other truck. The air was taken off of the Ventrilo Tundra and I tried to save it but couldn't. I don't think wind was a factor, I'll just call it driver error and hope that I can give the Ventrilo Tundra a better show when we take it to Bristol in August and Gateway in September."
T.J. BELL, No. 11 Red Horse Racing Toyota Tundra, Red Horse Racing
Finishing Position: 22nd
How was your truck in today's race?
"The truck was pretty good there. We started in the 12th and moved back a bit. It was a little loose with the green race track. We battled hard with Ricky Carmichael. I think we had a little better truck than him. Our truck was very line-sensitive, so I had to run the bottom. When we got up to some trucks, he got back up to us, got underneath us and loose. The Red Horse Racing team did a great job getting the thing back together for some more points, but I'm looking forward to a good run at Charlotte."
TIMOTHY PETERS, No. 17 Strutmasters.com Toyota Tundra, Premier Racing
