COONS' FIFTH LEADS TOYOTA IN WESTERN DIRT DOUBLE-HEADER

TORRANCE, Calif. (March 1, 2010) – Jerry Coons Jr. earned his second top-five finish in four races this season with a fifth-place showing at Perris Auto Speedway on Sunday night in the second of a USAC National Midget Car Series west coast double-header this past weekend.

Coons’ fifth-place finish adds to his fourth-place showing at the non-USAC sanctioned Chili Bowl Nationals to kick off the 2010 campaign. He also finished fourth in the season-opening USAC Silver Crown race at the USA Raceway in Tucson.

In addition to Coons’ showing, fellow Toyota-powered pilot Dave Darland registered an eighth-place finish at Perris in his Keith Kunz Motorsports entry to give Toyota two top-10 finishers on Sunday. The race was originally scheduled for Saturday evening, but rain pushed the event back one night.

Earlier in the week, the series visited the dirt track at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway on Thursday night. Darland took honors as the top finishing Toyota with an eighth-place result – five spots ahead of Coons, who placed 13th, despite qualifying fourth.

Darland has now placed in the top-10 in each of the season’s first three USAC Midget Car Series events with a fourth at Tucson, to go along with his pair of eighth-place finishes this past week. He now stands in seventh-place in the championship hunt, two spots of Coons.

The USAC National Midget Car Series resumes March 23 and 24 at the Hickory (N.C.) Motor Speedway.
