DARLAND, COONS LEAD TOYOTA AT COPPER ON DIRT
TORRANCE, Calif. (Feb. 22, 2010) – Jerry Coons Jr. placed fourth in Sunday’s Copper on Dirt Silver Crown race, while fellow Toyota pilot Dave Darland was fourth in the accompanying USAC Midget Car Series event at the USA Raceway in Tucson,.
In Silver Crown action, Coons qualified third on Friday and maintained his spot near the front throughout the event to place fourth. In addition to Coons’ strong effort, Brian Tyler brought home his Team 6-R Racing-prepared Toyota in ninth-place after qualifying sixth to give Toyota two top-10 finishers in the season opener. Not far behind were 6-R teammates Tanner and Kody Swanson, placing 13th and 14th. Coons’ RW Motorsports teammate Shane Hmiel rounded out the Toyota contingent with an 18th-place finish after qualifying fourth.
A pair of Toyota-powered entries also placed in the top-10 in National Midget car action with Darland bringing home his Keith Kunz Motorsports entry in fourth, followed by Coons in ninth for Wilke-Pak Racing. Team 6-R also prepared cars for each of the Swansons, with younger brother Tanner placing 11th and Kody finishing 23rd. Both Coons and Tanner Swanson won Friday night heat races.
Each of the races was originally scheduled to run Saturday night, but wet weather pushed the event back to Sunday afternoon.
The USAC National Midget Series continues Feb. 25 at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway Dirt Track, while the USAC Silver Crown Series is off until May 22 when the series resumes at the Iowa Speedway.
