JGRMX/Toyota/Yamaha Salt Lake City Results
HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. (April 26, 2009) – After a four-year hiatus, Rice-Eccles Stadium was again host to AMA Supercross. The series visited Salt Lake City each year from 2001 through 2004. In anticipation of the return of supercross, Utah’s Governor attended a press conference at the stadium on April 23. “This is the greatest sport in the world, and we have brought it to an Olympic Stadium for Saturday night’s race,” said Governor Huntsman (Rice-Eccles Stadium was the site of the opening and closing ceremonies for the Olympics in 2002). Unfortunately, rain intruded on the open stadium cancelling the second practice session. Even with the rain, 42,135 fans welcomed the series back to Salt Lake City.
Slippery conditions greeted the riders for the heat races. Josh Grant led his heat early in the race, but succumbed to the slop and went down. He remounted and charged finishing just one position outside of qualifying. Nathan Ramsey was right behind Grant. Both Grant and Ramsey had to attempt to qualify from the Last Chance Qualifier (LCQ). Grant went to the main, but Ramsey was ninth in the LCQ and did not transfer (only the first and second place finisher transfer from the LCQ).
Grant started the main event mid-pack in 11th place. He pushed forward the entire race and took the checkers in sixth position, retaining fourth in series points and top-ranked rookie status.
After 16 of 17 rounds the Supercross Class (450cc) standings are:
1. James Stewart 357 (11 wins)
2. Chad Reed 351 (three wins)
3. Andrew Short 257
4. Josh Grant 223 (one win)
5. Kevin Windham 218
