It’s been a good week since the finals went down at the House of Drift, but wow, what a year for Formula Drift and the last official year of competition for SR by Toyota in the world’s best professional drift event.
To celebrate our team drivers – Fredric Aasbo, driver of the Papadakis Racing/Nexen SR by Toyota tC and Second place overall in the 2016 points standings; Ken Gushi, driver of the GReddy Racing/Nexen SR by Toyota 86; and Ryan Tuerck, driver of the O’Reilly/Gumout/Hankook SR by Toyota 86 – we decided to invite 70 lucky Scion owners down to sit trackside at Formula DRIFT Irwindale.
The trackside suite had the best view of the track, right on outside zone two, where we saw plenty of action and accidents go down all day long. In addition, we gave these owners a lot of free goodies, including a laptop bag, SR by Toyota snapback cap, shirt and portable USB charger. We even handed out food vouchers!
Also we realized grabbing a parking spot inside the venue at FD Irwindale is a true premium because every year the parking lot caps out at capacity, and it caps out very fast. We dedicated a portion of the lot to Scion owners and the first 50 owners that came in were surprised to receive free parking. Every year, including this year, we see a lot of Scion owners come to the event so it’s no surprise the lot became a mini Scion car show!
But doing special events such as this and giving the star treatment to our Scion owners isn’t something new to us—in fact, we did it on the regular, and it’s been so much fun.
We used to take over Knott’s Scary Farm for a night, and were able to donate to a good cause, asking our Scion owners to bring an unwrapped toy to be given to Toys for Tots before they could go wild in the ghoulish themed amusement park.
For hardcore FR-S owners, there was the First 86, where invited the first 86 FR-S owners to Scion headquarters before embarking on a long day of driving that included a tour of our facilities and the Toyota Museum with a final stop at Formula D Long Beach.
Music lovers should also remember Scion fondly for the various festivals and music events we’ve been involved with. One of our favorites was the Unlock the tC Party, where we had special guests The Spits, Rob Wonder and dubstep/drum and bass producer, 12th Planet on deck to keep attendees dancing until the “Unlock the tC Road Trip” game winner was announced—and in case you were wondering, that lucky person won a brand new 2011 tC.
Last year we thought it would be a good idea to gather various automotive influencers out to HQ to introduce the iA and iM sedans to the car community, and so we called our friends from Super Street, Driving Line, Crooks & Castles and Fatlace (to name a few) to come check out the two new cars and to bring cars of their own to celebrate a day of car culture at the Scion Influencer event.
And of course, there was one of our big OG campaigns, the “Scion United” owners event, where we called on 300 Scion owners, either stock or modified, to come out to the Nevada desert for a true festival experience and celebrate the unique vibe that Scion had created at the time for itself. To this day, the message of individuality continues to ring true, and even though Scion’s parties have come to an end, we’ll have a lifetime of memories to carry on forever.
Thank you for being a part of it!
