“The pressure is definitely on now,” says Fredric Aasbo, one third of team SR by Toyota and driver of the Papadakis Racing/Nexen SR by Toyota tC. “It’s one of the closest championship chases Formula Drift has ever had.” Coming into the second to the last event of the 2016 season, the competition has gone beyond fierce, it’s a downright exciting buildup to the finale. In the eighth episode of the 2016 Driven To Drift series, Aasbo, Ken Gushi and Ryan Tuerck all share their thoughts on what’s looking to be a proper send off for Scion’s involvement in professional American drifting.
A place where the weather is as intense as it can be in Texas, there are other factors that can play into how well our drivers can perform. For Gushi, keeping cool is essential, and for Aasbo, relying on muscle memory to get through a course can make or break your day, for any driver really.
Sitting in Second place overall in the points championship standings, Aasbo’s not far off from hitting his mark at the finals, but he has expressed that Texas Motor Speedway could be his favorite track, as it “has all the best parts of all the tracks I’ve driven around the world, all rolled into one.”
For the GReddy Racing ace, Ken Gushi, even qualifying with a score as high as a 96 doesn’t hold the power it once did a few years ago. “A 96 used to put you way ahead of everyone else back in the day,” he says. “This time four drivers qualified with a 96, and it’s crazy to think that a score that high puts you into fourth place.” Aasbo also adds, “Before we used to divide the brackets up by ‘easy’ or ‘hard’—now, there are no more easy brackets. Every battle is really tough when you’re facing the cream of Formula Drift’s crop.”
SR by Toyota is gearing up for the season finale at the House of Drift, the iconic Irwindale Speedway, this weekend. Come cheer us on in our final season as the Scion drift team and to see if Aasbo can clinch the overall win to truly deliver a victory in style.
